PathoBox – Advancing Healthcare in Anatomical Pathology

In the context of the “Health from Portugal — Agenda Mobilizadora para a Inovação Empresarial” project (grant agreement No C644937233-00000047) BMD has been developing a digital pathology solution for the screening and annotation of digital slides, PathoBox. The platform is compliant with industry standards, supporting the DICOM norm for the storage and visualization of images, guaranteeing interoperability between different scanners and storage solutions. The open-source PACS Dicoogle is used as the storage service, aligning with open-data principles for greater accessibility and flexibility.

Over 725 digital slides, from distinct modalities, totalling 1.4 TB of data, provided by the Faculty of Medicine of Coimbra have been uploaded to the platform. These slides were annotated by expert pathologists to develop automatic image annotation algorithms based on AI technologies.

The platform offers remote access from any device, enhancing medical practice and streamlining workflow efficiency. Worklists can be automatically created based on custom rules to distribute the cases as they arrive to the archive. Users have access to their personal space where they can check their worklist for the day. Reports can be generated directly from the platform, with the ability to use pre-generated report templates or voice-activated text-snippets. Users can collaborate in the screening of the slides, with the ability to annotate the images and upload these annotations to the medical report (Fig. 1).

PathoBox is being validated in this year’s DICOM WG-26 Connectathon, it takes place from January 29th to June 3rd. This event seeks to bring together several vendors in digital pathology to test and validate the DICOM interfaces. BMD is participating in this event both as an image archive and image viewer provider, seeking to solidify and strengthen the interoperability of its solutions.
